It is a little after 7 pm here in Rome. While I am winding my day down (At least a little. Hopefully, we will be heading out to see St. Peter's Square at sunset while enjoying a gelato) most of you are hopefully enjoying wonderful weather on Memorial Day. It was 84 degrees here today, definitely hot in the sun at midday, but it seems that once it hits late afternoon it cools down quite a bit with a wonderful breeze.
Last night we ate at a wonderful little restaurant somewhat near the Pantheon and had gelato at a famous gelateria called Giolitti. It was a great way to spend my first evening in Rome.
Today we had our first outing to see a really beautiful exhibit at the Scuderie del Quirinale. The exhibit is called Da Caravaggio a Bernini. It had both paintings and sculpture that were remarkable in size and technique. One of the pieces that stood out to me was Bernini's "Christ Crucified". It was the lone figure of Christ hanging , but without the actual cross. It is the only Bernini sculpture that was ever made not in a group. The simplicity of how it was shown lent to the strength and beauty of the piece and, I believe, the true simplicity of what we as Catholics may believe as well. It certainly made a powerful impact on me.
I was also lucky enough to go on my first shopping trip to the grocery store. It is amazing how Italians will say things are "not far away". From my perspective it was a little far away for me! That's the American in me talking now. I'm certainly getting a whole lot of steps in and it's only the first day.
Buona notte for now!
